Project Description

A contemporary single storey structure is added to a Federation style house within a heritage conservation area in Cremorne. The project involved the sensitive restoration of the existing heritage house and demolition of unsympathetic additions. New work offers new living spaces at the rear of the house opening directly to the rear yard and to a new eastern courtyard created between the new pavilion and the existing house.

The new pavilion has been sculpted to respond to a mature jacaranda tree within the rear yard. The kitchen opens to both the rear yard and the central covered courtyard space. Bathrooms and skylights have been added within the existing structure and extend the existing hall into an informal sitting room opening east to the central covered deck. Materials provide a contemporary texture compatible to the decorative Federation features of the house.

The project explores the relationship of house and garden to maximise the sense of space and the opportunity for the interplay of an appropriate level of natural light to provide an open yet protected suburban environment.
