Riddell Residence

This project involved the alterations and additions to a single storey semi-detached dwelling opposite Queen’s Park. The existing dwelling has been substantially retained and refurbished into bedroom spaces. New work involved removal of insensitive 1960’s additions to the street facade and the reconstruction of the front “verandah” space.

A new entry gatehouse structure and a separate entry have been added to the side of the dwelling. The new entry is set as a pavilion along side a reflection pond. A series of lean to additions to the rear of the dwelling have been demolished to make way for the construction of a new two storey light weight pavilion accommodating open plan living spaces on the ground floor and a master bedroom suite on the upper level. The space between the new and the old acts like a webbing and provides a high level northern facing window to the living/dining area. The living room opens out the rear courtyard and a partly covered BBQ and seating area. A series of informal steps lead up to a grassed courtyard beside a small pool. The new work involves the exploration of sculptural architectural form.
